Meet Shakespeare in monastery ruins

Every summer, Romateatern stages drama productions that attract thousands of visitors of all ages. For 30 years, productions have been performed outdoors in the dramatic setting of the Roma monastery ruins. As a rule, a Shakespeare play is staged.

When dusk falls and the atmospheric stage lighting takes hold in these 12th Century ruins, it feels as though you are transported back to Shakespeare’s time.

As you like it

In the summer of 2023, Romateatern offers a genuine Shakespeare classic: “As you want it”, directed by Stefan Marling. It’s a crazy story and a summer ode, full of sharp comic dialogue and gory situations.

Romateatern is very much an ensemble theatre and the spectacular environment here on Gotland is also much appreciated by directors and many well-established actors who choose to spend their summer in outdoor productions and all the demands that Shakespeare puts on speeches and roles.
