7 of our favorite beaches on Gotland

Gotland constantly tops the list of sun-drenched destinations. No wonder the island’s many beaches are so popular.

In summer 2020, Destination Gotland asked its followers on Facebook to recommend their favourite beaches. Over 50 beaches were named and here we present the seven most recommended. Here, you will find seven beautiful sandy beaches with a wealth of services, or quiet, hidden gems.

Classic beaches

Sudersand

Gotland’s most beautiful beach, according to our followers. The beach is very popular in summer and it is easy to see why. A long and wide stretch of chalk white sand. And if you want to do more than simply relax on a sun lounger, there is plenty to do here for all ages. Try surfing, enjoy a pleasant massage or a delicious meal.

Tofta

A popular summer spot for families with young children and teens. Tofta beach attractions include a beach club, beach bar, restaurants and ice cream in generous scoops. Here you can play volleyball with the hot sand under your feet or solve crosswords in a sun lounger. The no. 10 bus runs to and from Tofta and Visby in summer.

Sandviken

Sandy beach located in the middle of a beautiful nature reserve. A stroll along the headland takes you to a small fish shop, perfect for buying your evening meal after a long day in the sun on the beach. If you are a morning person, Sandviken is the ultimate beach to witness captivating sunrises.

Worth a detour

Nisseviken

The obvious choice if you are looking for a child-friendly beach in southern Gotland. A slightly smaller sandy beach with plenty of grassy areas if you are not too fond of sand everywhere. A long jetty stretches out into the sea which is said to be the warmest place to swim on Gotland. There is a restaurant and cosy beach bar in Nisseviken in summer.

Smöjen

Once upon a time, this somewhat secluded promontory outside Kyllaj, was a limestone quarry. Today, it is open to the public who can swim in the water filled quarries. Or you can go for a swim in the sea from the coarse sandy beach nearby. If you arrived by boat, you can moor at the old shipping pier.

Ljugarn

Ljugarn seaside resort is a dream location and popular holiday destination since the late 18th century. The sandy beach extends several kilometres and is just a stone’s throw from local cafés and restaurants. Ljugarn is also an attractive spot for surfers.

Norsta Aurar

Not far from Sudersand is another gem of a beach. Characterised by its fine-grained sand and wild sand dunes, Norsta Auren is an oasis of calm. As soothing in the height of summer as in the depths of winter. We recommend taking a walk along the beach all the way to Fårö lighthouse.
